Yes, there is a possibility of liability considering how the child was injured.  The fact that there was no supervision should be significant in this situation.

It is possible that the school is negligent.  It depends on the facts and very few facts were provided in the question.  Of course the main issue is how did the injury occur.  The age of the student might also be a factor.
